Stephen J. Martin

April 11, 2011

Rich's Piece by Herbert Freeman

Rich, who works Downtown, emailed me this photo of a piece he recently acquired from Mr. Freeman.  Earlier, on the same day that Rich sent me his photo, I happened upon a 2009 Al Jazeera video about Stephen J. Martin.  That video and this post in Taxidermy are the only references to Mr. Martin I could find.

Chicago cartoonist Stephen J. Martin

Mr. Martin is a homeless man who spends his days drawing his comic books in Chicago coffee shops.

i’ve watched the aljazeera Video a few times

I think Stephen martin’s work is amazing

i’m assuming it;s adult content (Nick Seve Triple X – XXX), which is
kinda like what R. Crumb had widely published in the Seventies.

If anyone sees this guy, waking up in Newberry Park in Chicago,
and are intereseted in giveing him a hand,
    give him the info
    that if he’d like to
he could send some copies of his work to a similar publisher

    and very Possibly
get his works, Copied, Reproduced, published
    and widely circulated —

there is an Audience for this stuff

give him some info to check out
on some R. Crumb cartoon strips, associated Publishers, other contemporary cartoonists, etc.
see if he’d be interested in checking it out

I came to know Thai Varick from my drycleaners on the upper west side of Manhattan in the 90’s. From day one i knew both he & his artwork was second to none. I accumulated & gifted several of his pieces over the years & tried many times to help him. Unfortunately his lifestyle had a much greater hold on him than I ever could have hoped to attain. May his soul find the peace & calm that was not to ever be his on earth.
