Feminine Profile by Herbert Freeman

Felipe Jesus Consalvos was born in Cuba in 1891 and emigrated to the United States in 1920.  He eventually settled in Philadelphia where he worked rolling cigars.  Consalvos is believed to have died sometime in the late 1950’s.

In 1981 over 800 pieces of Consalvos’s work were discovered in a garage sale in west Philadelphia.  These pieces were acquired by the Fleisher/Ollman Gallery and the work was conserved.

Felipe Jesus Consalvos is now considered one of the true greats of  American Outsider art.
