July 28, 2010

Jack of Hearts by Herbert Freeman

Tsang Tsou Choi (1921-2007) was at the time of his death believed to be the oldest graffiti writer on he planet.  From the age of 35 till infirmity struck him in his 80’s he painted his claim to Kowloon and surrounding lands in the city of Hong Kong.  At the height of his career his distinctive calligraphy was a persistent presence on the streets of the city.  No sooner would his screeds be covered over than he would repaint his messages.  Patrick Lau a Hong Kong legislator summed up Tsang’s work by saying  that “…the most important thing is it’s so consistent. It has become an icon and people recognize it — and that imprints in people’s minds.”
