Tran Trung Tin

May 3, 2010

Self-taught artist Tran Trung Tin began painting in 1969 in Hanoi, Vietnam as a reaction against the war and against government restrictions of expresson.  Having few resources the artist painted mainly on newspapers and rice sacks because they were freely available.  In 1975 Tran Trung Tin moved south to a village just outside Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).  There he began painting on 8 1/2 x 11 inch photo paper.

Because Tin’s paintings were not government approved he was not able to exhibit his work until 1989.  Now that artists in Vietnam are no longer restricted in their style Vietnam has become a thriving art market.  Tin, a pioneer of artistic expression, was not concerned with the art market.  He painted for his own reasons.
