Alfonso Castillo Orta

April 21, 2010

This Teacher piece by Herbert Freeman is a video capture from the previous post.

Mexico has one of the richest folk art traditions in the world.  One of the great folk art masters was the ceramicist Alfonso Castillo Orta.  Don Alfonso and his wife and creative partner Soledad Marta Hernández Báez decided to quit dairy farming and dedicate themselves totally to the family craft in the 1970’s.  They also wanted to break away from the traditions and forms earlier generations of the family had followed up till then.  The work became more elaborate and complex while at the same time explored new narratives.  In 1996 Don Alfonso was awarded the Premio Nacional de Ciencias yArtes.  He died in 2009.
